A merger tree in 3D: the spheres correspond to positions and sizes of dark matter halos that merge from redshift z~5 to z=0 to the most massive halo in the MDR1 cosmological simulation. Colors represent the different timesteps; the big red sphere in the center corresponds to the final halo’s position and size. The grey box just helps to guide the eye and has a side length of 40 Mpc/h.
All the information can be extracted directly from the public CosmoSim database.

The image/movie shows the distribution of gas in the CLUES simulation B64_WM3_186592, a resimulation with 40963 particles, rendered with PMViewer. Colors represent the density of gas, from dark blue for sparse to bright yellow for very dense regions. The resimulated area was chosen because of its similarity to the Local Group, with Andromeda (M31) in the center, M33 to the lower right and the Milky Way at the upper right corner.More information and downloads
